Questions to Ask Yourself
When considering membership in SBCSAR, you need to examine your reasons for joining the team. If you seek thrills or glory, perhaps you should take up one of the popular sports that meet your needs. Emergency services demand a high level of skill and dedication because lives are truly at stake. More importantly, the lives of your fellow teammates often depend on your skill and judgment, and we often operate in bad weather and in remote locations.
- How does you family feel about you joining the team?
- Can you make the necessary financial sacrifices?
- Are you available for mid-week, as well as weekend operations?
- Are you able to attend an operation for two or more days?
- Can you operate unsupported in the field for several days?
- Can you attend trainings and meetings, and respond to operations?
- Can you operate in under a chain of command during operations?
- Are you willing participate in the administrative and maintenance duties?
You need not answer all of these questions at his time, but you should consider them. Few people can give an unqualified yes to all of the above questions. As volunteers, we realize there is a certain give and take necessary to fulfill our mission. However, you should take the time to evaluate your skills, motivation and capacity to be involved before you make a commitment to the team.
